Had a couple of weird dreams last night.

The first one I can barely remember. It was in a wooded town setting, vaguely Sierra foothills-ish. There were two guys running around, one of them first-person, I think being chased by the police, taking photos. There was also a nuclear bomb at a test site (which was just a corner lot in the town with a bench and a shack). They set off the bomb and got away. Later they came back that way, and the damage was minimal (the blast had spread out from the lot into the street, but the nearby houses were still standing). The weirdest thing about it was that when I went through the blast area, it felt warm and tingly. I can't recall ever having tactile sensations in my dreams before, at least not any that stood out.

I think I woke up and drifted back to sleep. I've been sleeping lightly lately, which sucks.

The second one was about cats. Sort of. Mutant or genetically engineered cats. It was in the same sort of setting as the last dream, though I was just wandering around. Here and there I would find cats. They started out normal, but as the dream went on they got stranger, though not in a disturbing way. It wasn't a nightmare. I started finding cats with odd fur colors (like blue), then cats in odd shapes. There was a tribble-cat, with no head, legs, or tail, just a purring ball of fluff. There was a cat in the form of a shoebrush, also headless and limbless, with bristles on the back that purred when you used it to brush off your shoes. There was even an aerosol can cat, that purred when you sprayed things with it. I knew that these cats had been genetically modified to be household items.

That's how I knew it was a dream. Real cats are never useful.

Last night I dreamed I was watching a video (movie?). It was like a third-person dream (which is how they usually go for me), except it felt like I was specifically watching it on a screen. The movie was about my mom and her old friend Carolyn on a trip to Monterey* with Ikumi (a character from Infinite Ryvius, an anime series a coworker loaned me). They came by train, and stayed at a Coke vending machine at a crossroads--they'd put in a quarter, open the front panel, and walk in. The interior was made of bare sheet metal with a few shelves attached to the wall, and about the size of a closet (but apparently big enough for 3 people to stand comfortably).

After resting for a bit, my mom and her friend went by bus to the woods, drinking tea and talking along the way. Strangely, they were both invisible to me, the viewer, during this trip--in fact, I don't recall actually seeing them at any point in the dream, but here it was obvious because the teacups and saucers were visible, and floated in the air as they held them. They then hiked back through the woods, talking about how a large skyscraper being built on an island in the bay (the island had a name, although I don't think it was a real one in the area. I can't recall what it was) was a bad idea to build in earthquake country, because if it fell it would wipe out everything around it, and a tunnel being built to the island was likely to get flooded. It was a very talky dream, actually. They walked by a BART train (BART doesn't go down to Monterey), and even at one point walked over it as it went through a crevace that left the roof level with the surrounding ground in the forest. Ikumi was back with them at this point (I recall there was some sort of subplot with him that the "video" would cut back to at points, but I can't remember it). They got back to the vending machine, packed up their stuff, and left.

As an interesting note, at some times the "video" was animated. Ikumi is of course an anime character, and also the bus trip was done in a sort of Miyazakian, painterly style.

I thought the video was really good, and woke up wanting to reccommend it to people. It took a while to sink in that I'd only dreamed it, which was kind of disappointing.

*It was supposed to be Monterey, CA, but it didn't look much like it. It looked more like way to the Sierra foothills, with rolling hills of golden dried grass next to green wooded areas. Apparently my subconscious is just as bad as Hollywood studios when it comes to scouting locations.

Dreamed last night about Akira Kurosawa and family running an inn/tavern in Edo-period Japan, and Toshiro Mifune (in ronin garb) as a customer. There was usage of swords. Wish I could remember more.

Last night I dreamed that I was the guy in Love Hina, except there was something about the house fronting some sort of shantytown/mining colony, and the people who lived there had been mutated by sludge found there (which may have been the stuff they were mining). I was trying to help the mutants with a rebellion, and at some point it turned out I'd been mutated too, as were the girls, just not outwardly (I could spit some sort of prehensile/amœboid brownish goo that I could use as tethers). The "mine" was sort of like a huge, broken-down warehouse, with lots of support beams. The floor was covered in water, and you had to clamber around on rocks, broken beams, and such to get around. There was a small, hidden open-air courtyard with a small tree in it. That's all I remember. It was actually kinda cool.

I woke up wondering where it'd come from. Then it hit me (partly) around noon: I'd read parts of the script to Total Recall yesterday, looking for the name of the mutant psychic siamese twin (to make a joking reference somewhere about GWB's mysterious hump). So the mutant freedom-fighters thing probably came from that. I still don't know how the Love Hina stuff got involved, as I haven't seen much of that series, and none very recently.

Still, Love Hina meets Total Recall. Yep.

In dreams

Last night I dreamed I was in Hawaii, then I was in a concrete schoolyard. I went into a small wooden building and sat down with some friends, including Tomas (who I don't see often) and Evan (who I haven't seen in years). Tomas had shoulder-length hair for some reason (I've only ever seen him with short hair). He went off to hit on some girls with the "Tomas Dance" (long story IRL). I left with Ev and we walked behind a freight train—there was a track running past the wooden builing in the schoolyard—to Evan's dad's little anime DVD shop (huh? Ev's dad doesn't run a store).

Somehow I got put behind the counter and had to take care of customers. Except that I'd never been told how to do it, and a customer tried to pay with a check of some kind. I had to use some sort of pad of preprinted financial forms with carbon paper, and I had no idea where to put the check or how to fill it out. As I tried to figure out how to use it, the customers were getting impatient. I tried to apologize and calm them down, but I still couldn't figure out how to use the forms and I was in a panic.

Not the sort of dream you want to have while you're looking for work.
