Still haven't had time to put together a real comprehensive post on my trip, but to tide you all over here's a couple of videos of me at the tournament:

My match from the men's team randori event:

The freestyle kata I did with Ash:

I don't think there's any video of my individual randori match, or my koryu dai san suwari waza with Aaron from the kongodantaisen.

I have my tickets! I'll be flying out the 18th (nonstop!), and returning on the 27th. I'll be staying at the Oyado Ishicho Inn, a ryokan (though one with modern amentities). That's only through the end of the tournament, though, so I still have to reserve a room for the 24th & 25th.

I almost had a heart attack when I ordered my tickets, and United rejected my card. I tried retyping it, and it was rejected again. Finally I tried retyping it with spaces between groups of digits, and it worked. Of course, the instructions say nothing about the spaces being required, and many e-commerce sites don't allow them. How hard is it to program a credit card payment system that doesn't choke on either?

I just emailed the local kendo dojo about checking out a class and possibly attending.

I've swung around a bokken a bit in Aikido, but we don't practice with it that often and I'm not what you would call skilled at it. There are sword techniques on the sandan exam, but I don't have to worry about that for a while. More importantly, I think it would help my form overall (since many of the motions in Aikido are derived from sword work), and participating in matches could help me get more comfortable with getting in the ring and going one-on-one, which I currently suck at. And besides supplementing my Aikido, it looks like a lot of fun! Still, I'm pretty nervous.

So, I leave tomorrow. Anybody out there interested in dropping by the tournament? It's the 17th through the 19th.

Still have to write the essay for my black belt test (stupid written portion!). Bleah.

I'm planning on being in town July 17-19 for the JAA- USA Tomiki Aikido National Tournament. Between events, nursing wounds, and trying to stay rested despite rock-hard hotel beds and/or sleeping on the floor, I probably won't have a whole lot of time to hang out, but it'd still be cool if you could drop by to say hi or maybe watch!

But it was long and probably not that interesting to anybody who wasn't already into it. So, in a nutshell: it was awesome, I had a great time, caught up with people I hadn't seen for a while and made some new friends, got my ass kicked by a man in his 60s, learned a lot, and was really tired by the end.

Now with that out of the way, an awesome video by The Avalanches (no, it's not Frontier Psychiatrist):

Early tomorrow morning I will be off to Ohio to be thrown about like a rag doll by men in pyjamas. Since I'm not going to risk having my laptop mistaken for a bomb, I will be sans intarwebs until I get back Sunday evening.

So, in the meantime, I leave you with an image to ponder in my absence:

Ômoto-kyo, the Shinto sect (with Taoist influences) that Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba was a member of, considers Esperanto inventor L. L. Zamenhof to be a deity.

My aunt & cousins left earlier today. It was fun seeing them again, but it's kind of nice to be back to the regular routine.

Went to Aikido today, and got in some good randori practice. I'm exhausted. I won't be able to make the traditional end-of-session beer-and-pizza night at Kip's on Wednesday, because I have an appointment with the psychiatrist Wednesday at 5:30 (and an appointment with the psychologist earlier, at 1). Again, I'm both looking forward to and dreading it. I was supposed to contact comic companies about internships by Wednesday, and I'm kind of embarassed that I still have only looked at some of the companies' sites and have not yet contacted any of them.

Wednesday I also hope to get together with Joe and go to Endgame for board game night. It's been a while. Joe hasn't been able to go because it conflicted with his wrestling practice, since he was my ride I stopped going too. Even when I got my license, I still didn't go, because I kinda need to go with somebody I know to things like this or else I end up blowing it off. Anyway, it should be fun, and I'll bring Web of Power.
